History

The idea of establishing a university-type institution has been around in Liberec for more than a hundred years. During the 19th century, Liberec developed from an ordinary serf town with extensive guild production into one of the most famous centres in the Habsburg Monarchy.  It became an important economic and political centre, known at that time under the German name of Reichenberg.  The town retained its position as an important economic and political centre even after the collapse of the monarchy and the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic.

In the post-war period, Liberec started to focus on the automotive industry, machine tool manufacture and plastics processing in addition to the traditional textile and glass industries. This fact determined, and to some extent still determines the R&D research orientation of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

The history of the Technical University of Liberec goes back to 1953 when the Technical College of Mechanical Engineering was established. Today, TUL consists of seven faculties and one institute, of which three are technology-oriented:

1953  Fakulty of Mechnical Engineering
1960  Fakulty of Textile Engineering
1990  Fakulty of Science, Humanities and Edducation
1992  Fakulty of Economics

1994  Fakulty of Arts and Architecture
1995  Fakuly of Mechatronics, Informatics and Interdisciplinary Studies
