"Elastography: Imaging Tissue Stiffness through Inverse Problems" by Dr. Uri Albocher
Elastography is an emerging imaging technique that maps the mechanical properties of soft tissues, offering clinicians a non-invasive tool to detect abnormalities such as tumors and fibrosis by visualizing stiffness variations. In this talk we introduce the fundamental principles of elastography, highlighting how it extends conventional imaging by integrating mechanics with medical imaging. We will discuss the mathematical challenge at its core: the inverse problem of estimating tissue elasticity from measured displacements. We then present the Adjoint Weighted Equation (AWE) method which was proposed as a direct solution approach to the inverse problem. The method has several advantages over the more standard iterative methods but also some shortcomings. We will consider these and present some numerical results demonstrating its effectiveness in recovering elastic properties of inhomogeneous materials
"Theoretical Understanding as a Foundation for Practical Learning in Engineering Education" by Ilan Zilberman
The lecture will focus on how early theoretical understanding can serve as a foundation for practical learning in engineering education. It presents a pedagogical and research-based model developed at Afeka College of Engineering, exploring how sequencing theory before practice enhances students’ applied learning, spatial reasoning, and confidence in design performance. The session will also highlight key findings from a mixed-method study demonstrating the pedagogical impact of structured, theory-first instruction on students’ learning experience and outcomes.
